Roof Leak? What to Do First
A roof leak is stressful, but a few quick steps can limit the damage until a roofer arrives.
Request a rooferCatch the water
Put a bucket or tub under the drip and move furniture, electronics and rugs out of the way.
Watch for a bulging ceiling
If water is pooling above the ceiling and it is sagging, keep people away. A roofer or restoration company can advise you on safely draining it.
Find the area in the attic
If it is safe, look in the attic with a flashlight. Water often enters higher up the roof than where it drips.
Take photos
Photograph the damage for your records and your insurance company.
Call a roofer
A roofer can tarp the area if needed and find the real source. See roof leak repair and emergency roof repair.
